April is National Volunteer Month. And although April is long gone, it isn’t too late to focus on volunteerism. While having a month dedicated to volunteerism is important, we should not only focus on the subject for one month out of the year. Volunteering is a year-round service.

With that being said, here are a few easy ways that you can volunteer in your local community.

Brightening Birthdays

This may sound a bit odd at first, but celebrating a young child’s birthday can make a huge difference. Currently, the Volunteers of America offer a service called “Brightening Birthdays” in which volunteers from local communities come together to celebrate the birthdays of homeless children. According to the Volunteers of America’s official website, Brightening Birthdays has spread the happiness and joy associated with birthday parties, gifts and cake to over 1,000 children in 10 states. Not only is this a tremendous way to give back to your community and those in need, it is a great way to spend an afternoon!

The Hero Network

Have you always wanted to volunteer, but have never been able to decide on how to donate your time? Well The Hero Network has got the perfect solution. On The Hero Network, families in need can post wishes or requests in the hopes that someone, a “hero,” will come along and fulfill that need. Requests range from the incredibly simple, such as sending postcards or birthday cards to those without large families, to more serious matters such as donating money to those in need of car repair. Either way, the website allows for quick and easy volunteerism.

Kaboom!

Remember running around at your local playground when you were a child? It was an exhilarating experience that you will cherish forever. Unfortunately, not all children have access to playgrounds. Kaboom! looks to change that. By volunteering with Kaboom!, you can help create a playground for children in underprivileged areas. According to the organization’s website, only one in four kids gets the recommended amount of physical activity per day. Physical activity is important for youth, as it helps promote a healthy lifestyle, social interaction and even empathy. The importance of a playground cannot be overstated. By visiting Kaboom!’s website, you can suggest a new playground, help volunteer at one, or simply donate to the organization.
At the end of the day, we are all human beings living on one shared planet and we all need to step up and do our part to help each other out. Use one of the above methods or come up with your own way to volunteer. You never know, you could one day be in a position where you are in need of help, so make sure to pay it forward.
